Jiangsu Zhongke Longcheng Energy System Co. Ltd, located at Changzhou city of Jiangsu Province, found ways to fully utilize the straw and turned the clean combustible gas into useful resources by employing the technology of biomass gasification and combustion. Based on estimation, biomass energy generated from straw gasification is 15% lower in cost than that of the natural gas. It is applicable to heating, furnace, and power generation.

The technology used in this project is putting straw, deadwood and used building templates into the gasifier and turning them into biomass gas and plant ash through anaerobic combustion. In collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the company found ways to deal with the tar, which is produced in generating biomass gas and might block the pipe or even affect safe operation. The project also lifted the gasification rate of biomass gas to above 80%, much higher than the average rate of 60%

Starting from 2014, the company, together with Changzhou Changhai Company, took the lead in adopting the management model of energy performance contracting and had a trial on this new technology of biomass gasification and combustion. Invested and run by Changzhou Changhai Company, a biomass gasification system was established with annual gas output totaling 18 million cubic meters of natural gas equivalent, while the cost saved due to use of new energy rather than natural gas is shared by the two companies.

It’s said the project takes up an area of 2000 square meters, equipped with 4 gasifiers with 3 in use and 1 standing by, as well as other supporting facilities. Since its operation in October, 2015, the project has generated combustible biomass gas equivalent of 2 million cubic meters of natural gas. With fuel cost as low as 5.2 million yuan, it altogether saved over 1 million yuan than using natural gas, an average fall of 14.75% in fuel cost every year.

According to relevant staff from Changzhou Changhai Company, the project also had other advantages apart from cost reduction. As biomass gasification generates no greenhouse gas, it’s as environmentally friendly as the natural gas. This will boost the company’s positive image in international market as a contributor to GHG emission reduction. According to estimation, under full production mode, the company is projected to utilize 70000 tons of biomass gas energy from straw gasification every year, which will replace the use of 30000 tons of standard coal, contributing to 600 and 75000 tons of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide emission reduction respectively.
